Third Grade Homeschool Curriculum
We are about to enter our third year of homeschooling, and while we have landed on some wonderful rhythms, we are still finding our footing with curriculum we love.
For my fellow homeschool mom enthusiasts, I would consider my ideal style to be a mixture of Charlotte Mason and Unit Studies. This year, I’m trying something a little different by piecing together my own unit study with multiple curriculums.
Cyrus has been in a huge ancient mythology phase for the last year. He’s become an expert on all the Greek and Roman myths and his brain is wired to obsess over one topic until he’s learned all there is to know about that thing. This makes unit studies a great fit for our family.
I decided to continue with the theme of ancient history and cover the Middle Ages/medieval history this school year.
Some of the subjects I want to cover are:
Bible/Devotional
Read Alouds
History
Geography
Science
Art
Math
Language Arts
In effort to keep things “on theme”, we will be going through the devotional The Treasure, reading the Chronicles of Narnia, memorizing Ephesians 6 (the armor of God), learning to draw medieval fantasies, mapping European geography, and studying engineering and early inventors.
Some of the curriculum I’ve chosen is Honest History (technically it’s a magazine subscription/Podcast, but I’ve purchased a bundle of topics covering the Middle Ages), Engineering by Harbor and Sprout, free print-outs of European maps, and The Treasure devotional.
We do school Monday-Thursdays, beginning with morning basket. This includes morning menus, our daily devotional, and a read aloud. I plan to rotate through Science, Geography, Art, and History on a loop schedule. We will also do Math, Grammar, and quiet reading each day.
After Thanksgiving, we will take a break from the Middle Ages to do an Advent study.
For Math, we have chosen Apologia level three (my son will be in third grade) and for Language Arts, Fix It! Grammar. This is my first year for both companies so I can’t give an honest review until we’ve had a chance to try them out.
Below, I’ve included a sample weekly schedule we plan to follow. It is based on a 30 week school year. I’m super excited to begin and I will share updates once we get into a solid rhythm!
I hope you found this helpful. :)
